Purpose of Test
Whenever we get hurt or injured blood clot formation takes place in order to prevent excessive blood loss from the body. This blood clot may take some time. By doing the above test we measure the time it takes for our blood to do clotting, from which various problems can be analyzed.
NORMAL TEST RESULTS
In general the clotting time measured should be ranging from 25-30 seconds. This value may vary slightly amongst different laboratories. Deviation of results from this value indicates suffering from various diseases and complications.
Reasons Behind Abnormal Results
The abnormality in the results may be due to the following reasons:-
- Bleeding disorders
- Liver infection or diseases
- Malnutrition or low level of Vitamin K
How Test Performed
This test is performed by taking blood sample of patient and then examining it in the laboratory. Few vitamins, and antihistamines may alter the accuracy of the test results hence a patient may be asked to avoid the intake of few medicines. The blood is taken out for sample through the old method of venipuncture.
