Purpose of Test

Billirubin is a substance that is formed after breakdown of several other components in the body like hemoglobin, myoglobin, cytochromes, degradation of aged erythrocytes, and other protein-containing components. It is of two types:-

  • Direct Or Conjugated Billirubin(Highly Reactive)
  • Indirect Or Unconjugated Billirubin(Less Reactive)

This test is used to measure the combined composition of both types of billirubin which helps one to know the protein breakdown and other metabolism in the body.

NORMAL TEST RESULTS
The normal value may vary depending on the laboratory testing techniques. Generally the range which is considered normal for total billirubin is 0.3 to 1.0 mg/dL.
Reasons Behind Abnormal Results

Abnormal results indicates that either billirubin-d or billirubin-t  or both which may lead to the following problems:-

  • Chronic Liver Diseases.
  • Anemia , Internal Bleeding Or Blood Clotting.

      How Test Performed

      This test is performed using the simplest method of taking blood sample and then examining it under lab through various specimens and chemicals. You may be suggested to take or to ignore few medications before the test hence doctor’s advice is a must.
