Purpose of Test
NORMAL TEST RESULTS
The normal range for this taste may vary for different laboratories. Generally the normal range is considered to be from 8.5 to 10.2 mg/dL.
REASONS BEHIND ABNORMAL RESULTS
A value which may be high or low than the normal range is said to be abnormal value for the test. There may be different causes for the abnormal results. These are:-
- Higher value may be due to excessive bed rest, large intake of calcium containing diet, multiple myeloma, paget disease, sarcoidosisor metastatic bone tumor.
- Lower value may be due to kidney failure, liver disease, magnesium deficiency, pancreatitis or abnormal absorption of nutrients from intestine.
How Test Performed
This test is performed by taking a blood sample from the patient’s body. The blood sample is examined and tested in the laboratory to know the level of calcium in it. The patient may be asked to avoid the intake of few calcium and lithium salts before the test as this may alter the test results.
