Purpose of Test
The pituitary gland in the body which is located under the brain releases a hormone called as the follicle stimulating hormone. This test is used to know the level of this hormone in the body. Follicle level is important to determine the proper functioning of ovaries in the body as an elevation in the level of follicle indicates that the ovaries are not properly releasing the estrogen hormone.
NORMAL TEST RESULTS
Normal FSH levels differ depending on a person’s age and gender. Depending on gender the normal results for this test are as follows:-
For Male:-
Before puberty: 0 to 5.0 mIU/ml
- During puberty: 0.3 to 10.0 mIU/ml
- Adult: 1.5 to 12.4 mIU/ml
For Female:-
- Before puberty: 0 to 4.0 mIU/ml
- During puberty: 0.3 to 10.0 mIU/ml
- Women who are still menstruating: 4.7 to 21.5 mIU/ml
- After menopause: 25.8 to 134.8 mIU/ml
Reasons Behind Abnormal Results
Abnormal results mean that the FSH value is either high or low then the required value. This indicates the following conditions:-
- High FSH level shows the menopause or early menopause in woman or presence of a tumor in pituitary glands.
- Low FSH level generally occurs in underweight, or no-ovulating conditions.
How Test Performed
A blood sample of the patient is taken which is then examined in the laboratory to know the amount of FSH in the body. The patient may be asked to fast before the test for accurate results. The patient may also be asked to avoid few medications before the test hence doctor’s advice is necessary before going for this test.
