Purpose of Test
Our blood is formed of various components of which one is the red blood cells. Red blood cells have hemoglobin as their major component which carries oxygen and helps in oxygen transportation in the body. This test measures the amount and level of hemoglobin in your blood which will help in diagnosing and determining that how well our body is functioning.
NORMAL TEST RESULTS
The normal hemoglobin level varies according to gender. In male the normal range is found to be from 13.8 to 7.2 gm/dL whereas in females this value changes to 12.1 to 15.1 g/dL.
Reasons Behind Abnormal Results
If the hemoglobin level is higher or lower than the required range then in both the cases the results are said to be abnormal. This may be due to or may cause the following complications:-
- Low hemoglobin may be due to anemia, bleeding from digestive system or low iron or vitamin level
- Higher hemoglobin level may be due to certain birth defects or pulmonary fibrosis
How Test Performed
The test is performed by taking a blood sample of the patient and then further examining it in the lab. The blood sample is taken out with the help of traditional method called venipuncture. This test is usually done as a part of CB which helps in determining the complete blood count in the body.
