Purpose of Test
When our body breaks down carbohydrates and produces energy lactic acid is produced. It is usually produced in red blood cells and its level helps in determining low oxygen levels in blood. This test is performed in order to calculate the amount of lactic acid in the body with the help of which oxygen levels in blood can be predicted. Hence, this is an important test.
NORMAL TEST RESULTS
The normal range for this test may vary slightly amongst different laboratories. Generally the normal value is considered in the range of 4.5 to 9.8 mg/dL.
Reasons Behind Abnormal Results
The value other than the normal range shows the abnormality in the result and may be due to the following reasons:-
- Heart failure or other heart diseases
- Lung diseases or liver diseases
- Very low level of oxygen in the body
How Test Performed
The test is performed by taking the blood sample of the patient and then testing it in the laboratory with the help of various specimens. There are no extra preparations required for the test but the patient is asked to do not exercise few hours before the test as this may alter the original results.
