Purpose of Test
The pituary gland located underside of brain releases a hormone called lutinizing hormone. This test is performed to determine the level of this hormone in the blood. This hormone helps in ovulation in woman helps to see if the ovulation can occur properly or not. That is why this is an important test.
NORMAL TEST RESULTS
The normal results vary according to the menstruation period in a woman. This can be described as:-
- Before menopause this value should be in range of 5 to 25 IU/L
- After menopause this value changes to 14.2 to 52.3 IU/L
Reasons Behind Abnormal Results
Values other than in normal range will be considered as abnormal values which may be due to or cause the following complications:-
- Imbalance of female sex hormone
- Ovulation not properly taking place
- Ovarian hypofunction
How Test Performed
This test is performed with the help of a blood sample which is taken out from the patient’s body for examination in lab through various specimens. Medicines related to birth control and hormone development may affect the test results hence doctor may ask to avoid intake of such medicines few hours before the test. Apart from this generally no special preparations are required for the test.
