Purpose of Test
The triple screen test is performed in the twentieth week of pregnancy for detecting the three components namely AFP (Alfa-Feto-Protein), Hcg (Human Chronic Gonadotropin) and estriol. All these have different functions and help to know the doctors that what further treatment or diagnosis is required for the fetus.
NORMAL TEST RESULTS
The normal results vary from mother’s age, ethnicity, weight etc. Depending on this required level of the three components are figured out and are compared with the results obtained to check whether the results obtained are normal or abnormal.
Reasons Behind Abnormal Results
The abnormal or positive result may be due to late pregnancy or over the weight of the woman. It may harm the baby’s health and the baby is more likely to take birth with a birth defect if the reports of triple screen test are positive.
How Test Performed
This test is performed by taking a blood sample of the mother, which may take about 5-10 minutes. In screening test the blood sample is tested by comparing it with different factors including age, weight etc. It is done usually in the twentieth week of pregnancy.
