Purpose of Test
Procalcitonin is a protein which is composed of amino acids of 116 types. It also synthesizes a hormone which regulates the smooth functioning of the thyroid glands. The main purpose of this test is to know the level of this protein in the blood which will give information about different actions being performed in the body that whether they are being performed normally or not. Hence, this is an important test.
NORMAL TEST RESULTS
The value of procalcitonin which is considered normal is less than 0.15ng/mL. Values higher than this give abnormal results which may harm the patient.
Reasons Behind Abnormal Results
If the results are not normal then the following things can be interpreted from the abnormal results:-
- Moderate bacterial infection
- Chances of thyroid cancer
- Noninfectious and severe inflammatory responses
How Test Performed
The test is performed by the simple method of taking out blood sample from the patient’s body and then examining this sample in the test. There is no preparations which are required prior to the test, but however the patient may be asked to avoid few things from the diet before this test.
