Purpose of Test
Plasma liquid present in our blood takes some time for clotting the blood. This is the time which will mention that hoe fast or slow the blood clotting process will take place in the body. Prothrombin test is the test which is used to measure this time. It is an important test as it will help the experts to know the details about the speed of blood clotting in the body.
NORMAL TEST RESULTS
The normal time measurement for the blood clot is usually from 11 to 13.5 seconds. This may be altered depending on whether the patient is consuming blood consuming medicines or not.
Reasons Behind Abnormal Results
If the values differ from the normal ones then the result is said to be abnormal which may be due to following reasons:-
- Bleeding disorders
- Liver diseases
- Low level of vitamin K in body
How Test Performed
No special preparations are required for the test but there are few medicines which may alter the test result. So, the patient may be asked to avoid the intake of these medicines before the test. The test is performed by examining the patient’s blood sample. The blood sample is tested to measure the time the plasma takes for blood clotting.
