Purpose of Test
Our blood is composed of several blood cells which help in growth and development of the body. This test which is called as Peripheral Smear test is performed in order to know the number and the shape of these blood cells. By knowing their number and shape their productivity and functioning can be predicted. This is the main purpose of this test due to which many a times this test is done with CBC itself.
NORMAL TEST RESULTS
The normal result may vary amongst different laboratories. Generally, the result is considered to be normal if the shape of the blood cells is as it is required and white blood cells are differential. They all have different ranges of a size which are termed as normal.
Reasons Behind Abnormal Results
If the size, shape, color or appearance of RBC’s is not as per the requirement then the result is said to be abnormal. The following are the expected reasons for abnormal results:-
- Deficiency of enzyme called lecithin
- Iron deficiency or liver diseases
- Hemolytic Anemia
How Test Performed
No extra preparations are required before the test and the test is performed by simple means of taking out the blood sample and then examining that blood sample. This blood sample is usually observed under a microscope to know the shape of the blood cells.
