Purpose of Test

Red blood cells are one of the major components of the blood which is composed of a red colored pigment called hemoglobin. The hemoglobin carries oxygen and supplies it to various parts of the body. The purpose of this test is to calculate the count of RBC’s in the blood. As this test calculates red blood cells it is an important  test as RBC’s plays an important role in the blood.
NORMAL TEST RESULTS
The normal blood count depends on the person’s sex. For males the normal RBC count is 4.7 to 6.1 million cells per microliter whereas in females this count changes to 4.2 to 5.4 million cells per microliter. This count may slightly vary from lab to lab.
Reasons Behind Abnormal Results

The abnormal test results that are either high or low RBC count indicates the following complications:-

  • Higher RBC count may be due to smoking, congenital heart disease, dehydration or kidney tumor.
  • Lower RBC count may be found due to Anemia, bleeding bone marrow failure or malnutrition.

How Test Performed

This test is performed by taking the blood sample of the patient which is further examined in the lab with different specimens to know the RBC count in the blood. No prior preparations are required before this test and generally the patient is not asked to fast for the test.
