Purpose of Test
Our muscles contain a substance known as creatine. When this creatine breaks down a waste product known as creatinine is produced. This test is used to examine and know the level of this creatinine in the blood. Measuring this level will tell us that whether our kidneys are working properly or not, as it is the function of the kidneys to reduce the amount of this waste product from the blood.
NORMAL TEST RESULTS
The normal results for this test vary according to the gender. For male the normal value ranges from 0.7 to 1.3 mg/dL whereas for females it ranges from 0.6 to 1.1 mg/dL.
Reasons Behind Abnormal Results
The results are abnormal when the level of creatinine is either higher or lower than the desired value. The reasons behind both of them are as follows:-

- Higher creatinine level may be due to blocked urinary tract, kidney diseases, infection or loss of body fluid from the body.
- The Lower value of creatinine may be due to malnutrition or decreased muscle mass.
How Test Performed
This test is performed by taking a blood sample of the patient which is tested and examined in a lab to check the level of creatinine in the blood. The doctor may ask the patient to stop the intake of few medicines which may alter the test results. Hence, expert’s advice is necessary before the test.
