Purpose of Test
The thyroid glands present below are neck is basically composed of three basic components which are TSH, FT4 and FT3. All these components play important role in metabolism of our body and have different significance. This test is performed to know the amount of all these three components in the blood to see if the thyroid glands are working properly or not.
NORMAL TEST RESULTS
The results of this test are said to be normal is the TSH ranges from 0.4 to 4.0 mU/l , FT4 ranges from 9.0 to 25.0pmol/l and FT3 ranges from 3.5 to 7.8 pmol/l. All these value may change slightly in different labs depending on their testing techniques.
Reasons Behind Abnormal Results
An abnormal result indicates that the patient might be going through following complications or diseases:-
- Liver disease or kidney failure
- Heart Attack or some serious trauma
- Intake of contraceptive pills or anticonvulsants.
How Test Performed
This test is performed by taking a blood sample and then later on examining it in the lab with different specimens. A series of test is performed to check the level of all these three components differently. The patient may be asked to fast or avoid few medications before the test for getting accurate results for which doctor’s advice is a must.
