Purpose of Test

Our thyroid glands produce a hormone called as triiodothyronine which is also known as T3. This hormone along with other T4 hormone controls the metabolism, heart-rate and temperature of the body. It also checks the sensitivity of the body. Hence, it is an important hormone for the body and the purpose of this test to know the mount of this important hormone in the body.
The normal value of free T3 generally varies from 3.5 to 7.4 picomoles per litre. This value may vary from laboratory to laboratory. The normal value will indicate the normal functioning of your thyroid gland.
Reasons Behind Abnormal Results

Abnormal results or very high or very low value of free T3 hormone in the bloodstream indicates the following conditions:- It may either indicate under-reactive or over-reactive thyroid condition which will make our body more prone to infections and will ensure the smooth and proper functioning and metabolism of the body through secretion of these hormones.

How Test Performed

It is very easy to prepare for this test. You just need to tell the doctor about your diet and medications which you are taking. The doctor may or may not ask you to ignore your medicines for the test and then will take your blood sample. Your blood sample will be then examined through different specimens in the lab to know the level of free T3 present in the blood.
